Surf Street Stairs Closed

Effective November 30, 2018, by order of the City Engineer, the pedestrian stairway between the westerly end of Surf St and the Front Street Parking Lot is permanently closed.  The closure is due to safety and accessibility concerns that have been brought to the attention of the City.  To access the area previously accessed by using these stairs, pedestrians can use Beach Street or other alternative routes.  This 40-year plus old wooden structure will be removed as soon as possible. The stairs will be replaced with an accessible structure when the City budget allows.  While currently the City does not have funds available to replace the structure, staff will be pursuing any available grant funding to restore this important link to the Embarcadero.
