City Launches “Morro Bay Cares” Program to help the Community in Midst of COVID-19 Pandemic

Morro Bay, CA – In a video address to the community, Morro Bay Mayor John Headding announced the launch of “Morro Bay Cares” program to help those in greatest need in our community, inform the general community and reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. 

Social Distancing 

In his address, Mayor Headding strongly encouraged residents and businesses to follow Federal, State and County Health guidelines with regard to social distancing efforts to reduce the spread of the virus locally. Residents and businesses should familiarize themselves with the new guidelines issued by the Federal government, by visiting  SLO County also issued new guidelines regarding restaurants and bars.  The County requests that all bars, winebars, nightclubs, and brewpubs be closed and restaurants be closed except for take-out, delivery and drive-thrus.    

Are You Okay (“R.U.O.K.”) Program Expansion 

Mayor Headding highlighted the expansion of the Fire Department’s R.U.O.K or “are you okay?” program, whereby our most vulnerable residents who are sheltering in place at home can sign-up with the City to receive daily wellness checks and help connect those residents to critical services such as food delivery. Interested residents can learn more about the program and sign-up at  This program joins the other City efforts to protect the safety and welfare of the community, including maintaining all safety services (Fire, Police, Harbor, EMS), water and wastewater trash services, and transportation services.    

New COVID-19 Webpage and Survey 

The City also announced the launch of the City’s COVID-19 webpage  The webpage will be updated with the latest COVID-19 information and links to other programmatic and agency resources.  City residents are encouraged to take the COVID-19 survey, by visiting and clicking "sign-up" if you have not used the Polco service.  The survey results will help the City direct its resources to our community’s greatest need. 

Special City Council Meeting Schedule for Thursday, March 19

The City Council will meet on Thursday, March 19 at 4:00p.m. at the Veterans Hall to consider ratifying the local emergency and fiscal emergency declarations issued several days ago by the City Manager and review the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) efforts underway.  The Mayor also announced the City Council will consider adopting eviction protections approved by Governor Newsom and SLO County this week.

An update on the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce’s efforts to help local businesses during the pandemic will be provided tomorrow.
